The French maid costume is based on the common 19th century uniform of female servants. Since that time it has become the conventional costume for maids in everyday culture.

A white apron or pinafore is the piece that changes the black dress into a French maid costume. Pinafores are the full aprons that also cover the shoulders. A white apron can also be used. The top half of a pinafore, with the shoulder sections, can be used with a white apron to leave a black midriff in the costume. Some French maid dresses will have a piece of white fabric under the neckline to replace the missing top half of the pinafore.
